To read to one ten-thousandth requires an
additional scale called the Vernier scale,
named after the inventer, pierre Vernier.
In the case if a regular micrometer, the vernier
consists of ten division, marked on the sleeve,
which are spaced withing nine divisions on the
thimble scale.
Each division on the vernier, therefore, is one-tenth
shorter than that of the thimble’s, thus represent-
ing 0.0001.
READING EXAMPLE:
1. Read to the thousandth of an inch in the same
manner as shown on the left. When the center
line of the sleeve falls between the lines of the
thimble, or when the line of the thimble does
not correspond to the center line of the sleeve,
the unknown amount is read by using the ver-
nier scale provided on the sleeve.
2. The vernier on the sleeve reads to one-tenth
of a thousandth of an inch or .0001.
nd which line on the ver-fi3. To read the vernier,
nier scale coincides with the line on the thimble
and read the number off the vernier scale, It is
nding the vernierfiimportant to note that when
gure isfi(ten-thousandth) reading, the correct
ALWAYS taken from the number at the vernier
scale and NEVER from the thimble.
4. Note that the vernier line numbered 2
coincides exactly with a thimble line
indicating 0.0002.

ONE TEN THOUSANDTH VERNIER

To thousandths of an inch
To ten-thousandths of an inch
The micrometer consists of a ground-screw spindle
xed nut, covering a range offiwhich is rotated in a
one inch. The micrometer screw
has forty threads per inch so that, in one
complete revolution, it moves one fortieth of an
inch or 0.025.
SLEEVE:
The micrometer sleeve is divided
into forth equal parts. Each part or division is
indicated by a vertical line. Each vertical line
represents one-fortieth of an inch or 0.025,
and, each fourth line is marked by a longer line
and a number which designates one-hundred-
thousandths.
More simply, the line marked 1 represents 0.100,
the line marked 2 represents 0.200
and so forth.
THIMBLE:
The thimble is divided into
ve equal parts, and, one complete rotationfitwenty-
of the thimble coincides with the
smallest division on the sleeve. Thus, the
fth of 0.025fidivision on the thimble is one-twenty-
or 0.001.
READING EXAMPLE:
1. Note that the thimble has stopped at a point
beyond 2 on the sleeve indicating 0.200 (see
illustration above).
2. Note that one additional line is
visible between the graduation
numbered 2 and the edge of the
thimble, indicating 0.025.
3. Line numbered 1 on the thimble coincides with
the center line of the sleeve. It means addition-
al one-thousandth of inch.
